Previous owners of 66 Darling Point rd

Thomas Barker

Thomas Barker

Winslow (and neighbouring Swifts)  are both located on the original 9.75 acre ‘allotment four’ sold to Thomas Barker on October 11, 1833, at the direction of Governor Bourke (successor to Governor Darling).

Barker also purchased the adjoining 7.75 acres for a total purchase price of 573 pounds (33 pounds per acre).

Thomas Icely

Thomas Barker

After two years of inactivity with the land purchased by Thomas Barker, it was sold in 1835 to Thomas Icely.

Icely was a landholder, stockbreeder and Member of the Legislative Council.

He is credited as the first to introduce shorthorn cattle in Australia First including the introduction of the first red bull in 1830’s.

Edward Wyld Esq.

The mysterious Edward Wyld Esq. shows up on council records as an owner between 1861 and 1865 but I cannot find any other details other than being a Director of the Bank of Australasia who mostly worked in the Head Office in  Threadneedle Street London

Senator John Ferguson

John Ferguson, builder, contractor and mining investor, was born at Kenmore, Perthshire, Scotland on 15 March 1830, son of John Ferguson, weaver, and his wife Janet, née Ferguson.

After a short period of primary schooling, he worked on the Marquis of Breadalbane’s estate. In 1847, he became a carpenter’s apprentice at Killin, later moving to Glasgow where he was employed as a journeyman and then as a carpenter.

In 1855, he arrived in Sydney where, following unsuccessful attempts at prospecting on the Mudgee and Mount Ararat goldfields, he worked again as a carpenter. After an interlude in Sydney, he moved to Rockhampton in 1861. Ferguson then established a successful construction enterprise, which was responsible for many public and private buildings in Rockhampton and Central Queensland. In the mid–1880s he bought a tenth share in the Mount Morgan gold mine for £26 000. Subsequently, one third of Ferguson’s share was sold for £13 500.

By 1888, he was able to retire, and from then on he spent extended periods overseas.

Ferguson died at ‘Winslow’ on Friday 30 March 1906

Dr Henry & Mrs Theresa Hort-Brown

Mrs. Hort-Brown was the widow of Dr. Henry Hort-Brown, of Maryborough, Queensland. Her father, Mr. Francis Clark, came from England about 90 years ago with letters of introduction from the Chancellor of the Exchequer to Sir Richard Bourke and Sir Thomas Mitchell, the latter being head of the Surveyor-General's Office at that time. Mr. Clark was an architect, and designed several of the public buildings of the day, notably St. Patrick's Church on Church Hill, and certain details of St. Mary's Cathedral. He had brought with him from England his wife, formerly Miss Margaret Robertson. The late Mrs. Hort-Brown was christened in St. James' Church, King-street, her godmother being the eldest daughter of Commissary-General Laidley—afterwards Mrs. Thomas Mort.

Married at Avoca, Darling Point in 1856, Mrs Hort-Brown died, aged 91 at Winslow in December 1927

Mr Alfred. Hort-Brown

Son of Henry & Theresa Hort-Brown, Alfred died of influenza whilst on holiday  from Winslow travelling to  Brisbane in 1929.

Sir Joseph george long innes

Sir (Joseph) George Long Innes (16 October 1834 – 28 October 1896), who was a judge and politician in colonial Australia, and Attorney General of New South Wales from 1873 to 1875.

Life History

George Innes was born in Sydney, New South Wales, the eldest son of Major Joseph Long Innes (superintendent of police) and his wife Elizabeth Anne, the daughter of Thomas Reibey and Mary Reibey.

George was educated at  William Timothy Cape's school and at the King's School, Parramatta. He then went to England and entered as a student at Lincoln's Inn in November 1856; and, after winning a certificate of honour in May 1859, he was called to the bar in November of the same year.

Having returned to Australia, Innes was admitted to the New South Wales bar in 1862, and practised till 1865, when he was appointed a district judge in Queensland. This position he resigned in 1869 and returned to practise his profession in Sydney.

George also went into politics, and was returned to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Mudgee on 7 March 1872, in May of which year he became Solicitor General in the first Parkes ministry.

He resigned as the member for Mudgee to accept an appointment to the Legislative Council, appointed Representative of the Government in the Legislative Council from taking his seat on 9 September 1873. In November he was appointed Attorney General in succession to Edward Butler, without a seat in Cabinet, holding office until the break-up of the Parkes Ministry in February 1875.

In the previous year he had accompanied Sir Hercules Robinson, the then Governor of New South Wales, on his special mission to Fiji, in connection with the annexation of the island to the British Crown, and was knighted in January 1875 in recognition of his legal services on that occasion.

Sir George acted as Chairman of Committees in the Legislative Council till August 1880, when he succeeded Francis Suttor as Minister of Justice in the third Parkes ministry, resigning from the ministry and the Legislative Council in October 1881, on being appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

In 1865 Innes married Emily Janet née Smith, daughter of John Smith of Llanarth, Bathurst, New South Wales.Sir George died on 28 October 1896 (aged 62) in England, survived by his wife, five sons and a daughter.

Hazel was a much loved and respected member of the Winslow Gardens Strata Committee.

As an original owner and resident of Winslow Gardens since 1961, Hazel was known by many co-owners and  is described as a passionate and energetic single woman who lived alone, drove  into her 90's, and was active in her life until  2019 when COVID 19 changed the way of life for many and sadly brought about her demise.
